Special (Bonus) Depreciation

  • Businesses can write off 100% of their new equipment and machinery purchases, effective for qualified property placed in service after September 8, 2010 and through December 31, 2011.  For property placed in service in 2012, the new law provides for 50% additional first-year depreciation.

Section 179 Expense

  • Many taxpayers are eligible to deduct the cost of qualified property used in the active conduct of a trade or business up to the maximum amount of $500,000 for the tax years beginning in 2010 and 2011.  For tax years beginning after 2011, the maximum amount is $25,000.  the deduction is reduced dollar-for-dollar by the amount of property placed in service during the tax year in excess of $2,000,000 for 2010 and 2011 and $200,000 for tax yers after 2011.
